A couple of months ago I met up with the MD of a manufacturing business, who I’d previously helped through a very tough negotiation with one of their biggest customers. At the end of the conversation, he asked if I might be interested in speaking at the business academy he attended, to share some of the techniques we had used.
And so it was that, a few weeks later, I was engaged by the academy founder to run a full day seminar for the MDs and CEOs of eight businesses, with turnovers ranging from £2m to £60m.
Rather than use material I’d done before, I decided to try and pull together everything I know about moving the dial on profitability, and to put it all into one, simple framework, focused on real-world application. I wanted the attendees to leave with a very clear idea of what they could apply, in their own businesses, starting the very next day.
It was ambitious, but I’m so glad that I did it. The framework that emerged was the “four levels” I shared with you a few weeks ago, and it worked spectacularly well. At the end of the day, each of the attendees outlined which of the levels they were going to deploy, and the profit they thought it would generate. And here’s the thing...
