Live Examples: New transformational strategy gives Acute Trust a fighting chance
Changes in the strategy for healthcare delivery are putting increasing pressure on NHS Acute Trusts - the "District General" hospitals of old. The plan to deliver more services in community settings, and increase the use of specialist centres and regional clinical networks, means that these institutions will need to change dramatically if they are to survive the funding cuts of the coming few years.
Barnsley NHS Foundation Trust is one such case. At the start of his 3-month assignment, Martyn Drake of Binley Drake Consulting conducted a strategic analysis, supported by group workshops and one-to-ones, to evaluate the existing plans and opportunities, and identified a major funding shortfall in year one, increasing in future years as the outlook for funding contracts. This issue was accentuated at Barnsley, where earlier work had identified an additional medium-term requirement to redevelop or upgrade many of the hospital buildings.
Working with closely with the Chief Executive and the Board through Away Days and Workshops, Martyn developed with them a new Strategic Vision, Aims and Values, and put together a detailed Transformational Programme to drive the £8m of efficiencies required in a compressed timeframe.
"Now that the programmes are in place, the Divisional KPIs are aligned, and the communications channels for the strategy are up and running, Barnsley Hospital has a fighting chance to not only survive in the short-term, but to generate the surpluses it needs to invest in its future" said Martyn. "It's imperative that Acute Trusts develop strong relationships with commissioners and partners, and they can only do this if they have a crystal-clear, shared vision of how they fit into the provider landscape of the future - one that will be significantly different to the past."
At the conclusion of the project, Trust Chairman Steve Wragg commented "Martyn's insight not only into a new organisation but a new sector was first rate, and the work he did for us was of the highest order. I would have no hesitation in working with Martyn again or recommending his work."
